Lights staying on

Recommended Posts

My neighbours 156 has a problem whereby the lights stay on all the time.

From what I can see the rear light on the drivers side is lit.

Any ideas as to cause and cure ?

Yes this is the well documented rev counter issue.

The cause is the "bulb out" warning circuit which is controlled by a bunch of chips on the rev counter - when one or more of these burn out it leaves an open circuit to one of the bulds that the system monitors (usually the offside rear lamp) - this will cause a perminent battery drain and the "bulb out" warning light will be on even though all the bulbs are working correctly.

There are two fixes for this.

1) Easy - replace the rev counter - one screw for the trim and two for the rev counter it's self, it should be a 5 minute job to change (assuming you can find a matching rev counter for the car, but Smaky can advise if any are interchangable)

2) Hard - remove the rev counter (as above) take it apart and replace the blown IC chips - there are serveral write ups regarding how to do this on the AO website along with details of the chips required - search the 156 forum area for Rev Counter issues.

Cheers

I will pass this information on, I know where there is a dead 156 that may have a spare rev counter. :)

that is a temporary fix, but not a long term one.

Just seen a couple of Rev counters on ebay plus there must be 5/6 cars being broken.

I replaced a LOT of bulbs (including the sidelights) on my 156 because the bulb out light was always on...

Just had the same thing on my 156 ....

Took 3 hours and £42 to sort, but all is well.

Managed to get one local, but a bit steep, I thought.

Really is easy to do, 3 screws and 2 "idiot proof" connectors (only go in 1 way!)

If you can't get one local, try the parts websites, they usually deliver next day and are mostly good to match parts correctly.

Good luck!
