  1. Hi smaky can you please find out if it is possible to convert the 164 24v cambelt tensioner (which is a solid round one ) to a later 166 24v type ( that is in the cage. Similar to the twinspark )and if so what do you need to do. thankyou
  2. you could save £12-14 grand and get a 2 year 30,000 mile skoda octavia elegance 4x4 (170 hp) or a vauxhall insgnia 4x4 (195 hp) bi-turbo.
  3. had a ferrari and a tyrrel but took the back wheels off both and used edam cheese wax to make up some spats on the arches I cut out of my escort. it was brill 4 big wheels and tyres front and back hardly ever came off round the corners.
  4. yes silly me should know better you're quite right .Cheers
  5. thanks smaky. the only issue i have is that on the 164 the only bleed plug is actually on the stat housing where as the 156 v6 has a bleed on the pipe behind the rear cyl head the 164 doesnt. I will check out the racing stat though. :im Not Worthy:
  6. I didnt read the thread but would have thought a tight bush was a good thing :He He:
  7. does anyone know if you can remove the fixed stat in the housing on a 24v 164 and fit a free fitting stat as the housuing stats are really hard to get hold of . I would have tried but dont have an old one to sacrifice at the mo . Was thinking of using the stat from the earlier 12 v model which is a changable one not fixed in the housing.
  8. yes just a slight budget issue with those
  9. Cheers smaky . All sounds like something out of nuclear missile to me but understand the issue.
  10. I have the same problem but isn't that part of a classic the rarity factor. Pain in the bum but just can't let mine go .
  11. I drove a 75 nearly bought a 3.0 veloce 20years ago but all the interior was warping and the head lining coming away and put me off . Plus after driving front wheel drives in all sorts of weather and living here didn't want to go back to a car I could only enjoy on dry days. Appart from that it was a great drive.
  12. Why is nothing simple anymore . Bring back carbs and good old distributors .
  13. I didn't mention the 164 as I have one but think its one of the best Alfas I've owned bit like a sud on steroids . Do think they are over looked though nice to know I'm not on my own.
  14. I'm not sure what exactly does what . Just very curious to find out. I think that the earlier AFM tell the peramiters of the air intake to the ecu but it also has an electronic box that seems to open and close the main air flow before it gets to the main throttle body on the AFM itself. I think this has been overtaken by the fly by wire system but I really don't understand properly .
  15. Interesting , I'm surprised nobody mentioned the GTV . I think this may turn into an intriguing list . Hmm!
  16. So here's a question if you had to choose an Alfa from the last 20ish years to keep as a classic or as a reference car of the brand ,what do you think it should be and why?
  17. Does anyone know if it's possible to rewire an old style air flow meter to run a maf style sensor. Or is there more to it than just the sensor message to the ecu. Does the air flow meter actually control the idle air at the meter it's self or is it all done at the ecu or is that only on the electronic throttle body's and not the cable controlled ones ?
  18. Are you getting any fault codes at all for injectors or anything else. What have you done so far . Have you checked the air by pass valve on the plenum chamber. It has a spring return valve in side if the spring is week it won't function properly and this could be part of the problem . It's a small black plastic housing with an air flow pipe attached . You need to pop it off and inside there should be a plastic valve with a spring sometimes the spring gets weak and the valve won't stay where it needs to to allow the engine to idle properly. You can but a repair kit from the dealer at about £7 I think . Hope this helps. I'm sure Smaky will have some other thoughts on this too. Have you checked the injectors for condition and leaks .
  19. Hi there nice to see a new member . Love the pic "Duel" right ? Welcome along . Judging by your skill set you shouldn't have much trouble sorting your 156 out and pretty sure you'll enjoy
  20. If it's a Chinese copy it will be called a 1212121777576435432135567876432 twin fire if they can fit it on the boot lid .

As long as you don't leave us for the Porsche boys site I wish you luck and will hold you to a spin if we ever meet up
  22. I think it's the one with the top seal as opposed to the bottom ring seal but not 100% on this just know that the one in the early GTV engine I swaped was at the bottom and the 2001 147 had the seal at the top but don't think there is any difference in what they do could even be a different manufacturer ? If smakys about he will probably know but that was the only difference I could see both were in the top of the head though. The ones you show are the same as the ones I refer to. Think the top pic is the later model .
  23. You tried doing a ecu " soft reset " with the battery cables off touching them together. Other than that as alfa pat said inlet pipes . Sounds like you need some more advice from Smaky if he's about though.
