  3. hi Ben and welcome :Big Grin:
  4. Crash bang wallop. Sorry that was me falling off my chair.:0
  5. You talking about the exhaust or the air box . You can use a k&n but your best bet would be to fit new pipe to the box under the wing this gets rid of the restrict or/resonator you fit pipe of the same diameter straight through from under the wing to the box then fit the filter inside the box it sits in the top where the pipe goes at the mo . Then from there you use the original pipe and maf from the air box to the plenum chamber this will give a free-flow intake. The benefits are minimal but does allow it to breathe a little more freely. This would be good if you upgrade the exhaust as the complete conversion will give a 5-10% power increase this is very minor and as I said it will let the engine breathe a little better. You won't notice a big gain in power just a bit more free revving. It will growl a little more just a bit . What are you trying to do anyway is it just cause you need to replace bits soon or just to be a bit different. I'm stupid should have asked that before waffling on . I've been tempted on mine but for all the cost couldn't tally it with what you gain to be honest. The exhaust and intake both help airflow through the engine a good S/steel system will be a little better than an off the shelf mild steel and will last a lot longer . All depends on how much you want to spend .

  7. I know I'm an old schooler but after many years have come to the conclusion (with the odd exception) that car companies spend a lot of time and effort doing extensive testing and retesting a lot of which is to do with what's sensible for reliability in mass manufacture. They would probably have done things like this with the GTA if it full filed all the criteria sitting in traffic, hot weather / climate , cold running , service requirements , parts cost . Ie producing several different bits and development cost and liability should it not work or blow up. I think cars like this are more for the person who can take it to a track day for sheer entertainment. If you notice pud at auto lusso recently put a lot of his cars for sale GTA sw 147 and GT v6 all of them the main selling point was (and I think it's right from my experience) that they are all standard original un molested and unmodified cars. This is an important thing to remember if you intend to keep an Alfa to be a future classic what ever model or spec originality counts . There are acceptable upgrades such as bushes S/Steel exhaust systems as these are viewed as longevity updates rather than mods. What ever you got cherish and enjoy.
  8. I don't know if this is relevant to your calculations train of thought or other but one of the things that makes me keep the 164 is that to replace it with anything else of similar spec I would be spending say £3000 then I think what am I getting and the answer in most cases is a newer reg No. So then I think what about much lower mileage and that adds at least another £2-3000 grand that then equates to £6000. But then if its a diesel I'll be saving fuel and road tax and hopefully reducing repairs . But then £6000 buys a lot of petrol ,tax and servicing and I still have no interest charge on the money I would have borrowed either. Food for thought maybe.?
  9. It does seem that what ever the engine size the bhp is what equates to the mpg with the exception of diesel. I may be wrong.
  10. Before anyone says anything no I haven't driven a 159 but what I've heard is they are quite heavy and this is shown up in the fuel consumption on the smaller engine models. I suggested this to Smiffy earlier as a consideration but had you thought of doing a diesel conversion to your 166 we never had any over here but sure they were available on the continent . What about a 2.4 10or 20v it would be different and a lot more economic and would have bags of low down torque. Not a oil burner fan particularly but thought I'd throw it out there as an idea.
  11. You could put a K&N panel in the box . The thing with cone filters is they really work by increasing the air flow so will the in box replcement .as you are probably aware. The best air for that is cold air rather that hot engine air . But apart from that no real reason .have you got a 156 ? If so you can use the box and fit the filter in the box then re do the pipe work out of the box that goes up inside the inner arch. What ever you do make sure the cone (if its in the engine bay) is high up not low down to keep it away from any chance of sucking in water splashed up from underneath. If you do fit it the recommendation is to remove the maf and drive the car with the cone for about 20/30 miles to get rid of any excess filter oil that may get sucked in to the maf and causing it to malfunction. Then put it all back together again. You will get the engine light on wile you do this but should go out after you refit the maf !
  12. Smiffy you doing the engine yourself. If so should be able to get a decent 2nd hand twinny for not too much. Worth asking Smacky maybe. Not to difficult to do just a bit of time really. What's the rest of the car like is there anything else major needs doing clutch suspension etc....
  13. How about a 20v 147 ? That might be an interesting project. Or the same in a GTV. Bags of torque and economy it would give a GTA a run for its money!
  14. We'll have to hope smiffy wins the lottery. He,he Oh British Touring cars just starting first race on itv4 ! Laters peeps.
  15. Serves me right If I drove a (vw) I would probably have a few spare quid but once a petrol head always a petrol head
  16. Yep I'll have to wait to see it all on the telly. Sounds like you've had a great time though when you've been . I would normally use the kids as an excucuse to try and make it a family thing but neither are interested in anything that's not on a computer screen . Maybe one day I'll keep hoping .
  17. Yes a bit mad I only live about 30 miles away and never seem to have the money to go. One day I will have a job that will allow me to live rather than just barely exist . I have promised myself to make it to the British Grand Prix and Goodwood . It's the classic race meeting there this weekend . The Revival.
  18. There is a Brit series they show on itv4 sometimes too . They used to run the metro 6R4 years back and escort XTrac mk2 ' s oh not forgetting the the original minis . Just thought it was good to see it back several different classes including the starter class 2WD cars too.
  19. Yeah I watched it when I was a kid used to be on "world of sport " . Britain has one of the original tracks Lydden Hill. Think its mainly on Eurosport but fast and furious .
  20. Hi there are you mr mac from AO .? Welcome aboard . You'll find it a little more relaxed over here .
  21. That's the one . Sebastian loeb has joined the players this season and good as he is he can't beat the top nutters well not yet anyway.
