K9d 108 Report post Posted January 18, 2013 My handbrake has been a bit graunchy lately and today it finally gave up the ghost and the cable is now hanging down underneath the car. Sorry for the crappy photo, but it was wet and cold on the ground. It looks like it has come apart at the lever end side of things, is this an easy fix ? Bigdar 62 Report post Posted January 18, 2013 I replaced both mine ages ago, and it wasn't too bad if I remember rightly. Although I can't remember the exact process, I recall it being pretty straight forward
K9d 108 Report post Posted January 18, 2013 Probably easier when there's no snow on the ground.
K9d 108 Report post Posted January 18, 2013 Just had a look at some on ebay, looks very much like a pushbike brake cable so not too much of a job then.
Bigdar 62 Report post Posted January 18, 2013 That's the ones I might well get corrected here, but I think there was a long, and a short one
K9d 108 Report post Posted January 18, 2013 These are the ones I looked at http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ALFA-ROMEO-156-2-x-HAND-BRAKE-CABLES-NEW-1998-2006-SALOON-TOURER-/120993848785?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3AAlfa+Romeo%7CModel%3A156&hash=item1c2bcb9dd1 The left one looks longer so that ties up with what you say. Smaky 73 Report post Posted January 18, 2013 I'd always recommend replacing both the left and right cables together, there's not much to it if you can get under the back end (I've done it with one side of wheels on the kerb before). 1, Put car in gear, 2, Raise car enough to get underneath safely, 3, Remove handbrake handle gaitor and loosen the 13mm adjuster nut (ensure you do not remove it or you'll learn some new words), 4, Underneath disconnect the 2 cables from the yoke at their forwad end, do not lose the plastic clip. 5, Remove the 10mm nut from the supprt brackets where the rubber cable hangers should be mounted (you may need to remove the whole bracket to remove the nut easily as the bracket is flimsy) 6, Unhook the cables from the caliper, 7, Slide the rubber boots on the cable ends (if they are still there) away from the supports and wiggle the cable to release it from the supports (this can sometimes be made easier with a squirt of plusgas), 8 Now simply reverse the order, tightening up the handbrake handle nut till there is a little dead space when lifting the handle, check that fully down the calliper arms are on the stops and at one click they are just off, that should be all. K9d 108 Report post Posted January 18, 2013 I will get the new ones ordered and wait for better weather. In the mean time it will be the wife's Megane, with its possible ABS issue.
Alfa156Melb 9 Report post Posted January 23, 2013 No point in starting another handbrake thread, so I'll just hijack this one The button on my handbrake lever is broken, so I've got a new lever assembly ready to fit in the car.. whenever i get around to doing it.... What happens if I remove the 13mm adjuster nut? Smaky can you offer any wisdom on replacing the whole lever assy? :Big Grin:
Smaky 73 Report post Posted January 23, 2013 Removing the nut isn't a problem if your replacing the whole handle (which I need to do too soon as the cracked button on mine has wound me up since the day I bought the wreck), The handle itself is pretty easy to change, only 2 13mm bolts underneath the car, a heatshield to whip off 3 X 8mm nuts, the cables 13mm nut and the annoying part of removing the centre console and kick trim to access the plug and allow the lever to be lifted out. Plus side is you normally find loads of coins down there so cost wise it can break out even.

K9d 108 Report post Posted January 25, 2013 Had a better look under my car today, no snow now, and the 2 rear cables are intact, so is the block they join to, the front cable is the broken one. So Smaky how difficult is this for me, or you, to replace ?
K9d 108 Report post Posted January 25, 2013 I'm struggling to find the front cable, Eurocarparts are out of stock Do you know the part number for it. I've found this on ebay but there is no picture to check it with. http://www.ebay.co.u...842335138&ps=54 Panic over, I've found one now.

WTI 59 Report post Posted January 25, 2013 Actually I'm thinking of sponsoring a Smaky Downunder Tour.. But he is from Harrogate originally and the cost of bringing his wet nurse over with him would be counter productive.
