Stripped Wheel Bolt Thread

Recommended Posts

I had a go at painting the rusty wheel bolts earlier,

started off with the 4 spares i had in the boot so i didn't have to take the wheels off, got 3 swapped over but the 4th was hard to undo. They were all quite tight (done up with an airgun no doubt) but this 1 was tight all the way out.

I checked the thread & found this :(

I took the wheel off to see the thread in the hub & the wheel was seized on & needed to use a mallet to get it off so it hasn't been off for a while. I tried another bolt in the threaded hole but it goes in at a funny angle & doesnt turn at all so i left it

Will i be able to get the thread 're-cut'? The wheel bolt isn't a problem as i've got the spares :). If not, what can i do? Cant see it being a cheap fix :bluecry:

Glad i found it though as i dont think it was in very tight anyway :tut:

My car is on 3 bolts at the minute so dont fancy driving it much :(

I checked all the others are ok & put some copper grease on the threads as they were all quite seized in :grr:

Any ideas what i can do?

Take a spare bolt to an engineering supplies place and get a tap and clean out the threads. Go steady, plenty of grease, one turn in, half back out until its done. If its completely shagged it can be helicoiled, or a new hub worst case, theyre not millions. Three bolts is ok unless your surname is Schumacher, keep the speed down a bit due to the imbalance of the missing bolt giving you steering vibration.

That happened to me the other day when I got my wheel back from the menders ...I ended up re-tapping all the holes with a 10mm tap

and used a die on the end of the dodgy bolt to recut it ...Job jobbed

Easy peasy repair tbh

LJ, if you would like a real technician to sort it then bring it over, the problem though is probably a misaligned brake disc, so jack up and remove the wheel, loosen the disc retaining spigot, fit in the 3 good wheel bolts to line the disc up then using the correct size TAP clean the thread out, then with all 4 bolts in retighten the alignment spigot, remove the wheel bolts and refit the wheel.

Thanks smaky  its sorted now, took it to an Alfa specialist 5 mins from my house & they re-cut the thread on it. Sounds like they done what you suggested too  there maybe something out of line as i have heard a metal on metal sort of rubbing noise when i go round roundabouts/tight 'ish' bends & they said the 'plate' (cant remember its proper name but it covers the back of the disc) was rubbing sligthly.

I've got to take it to the wonderful world of Alfa dealerships anyway as the lacquer is bubbling on the back bumper so will mention that noise too :(
