K9d 108 Report post Posted June 5, 2014 My 156 2.4 JTD 10v is losing water, I first noticed it a few weeks ago when steam was coming out of the expansion tank and the temperature was reading too high, but no heat from the heater. I changed the split expansion tank, refilled it and kept an eye on it for a while, all seemed OK, but today Kathy rang me to say it was overheating again, I got her to lift the bonnet and check the expansion tank, it was empty. I put about 2 litres of water in, followed her home and then had a look for leaks but can't find any. I did notice that there is a constant flow of water into the top of the expansion tank, not sure if this is normal. When I was following her I did notice it was quite smoky on, I'm assuming here, down shifts it looked like oil smoke not diesel smoke. The engine is on almost 200k miles so may be approaching the end of its life I would like to point out I don't drive it very often so little issues become big issues before I'm made aware of them. Smaky 73 Report post Posted June 5, 2014 Other culprits on the JTD can be. Hoses, heater matrix, Head gasket, Oil cooler, EGR cooler, Cracked head, Water pump, Weak head cap, Pixies.

Bigdar 62 Report post Posted June 6, 2014 (edited) I've had to chase leaks on the wifes car many times, very frustrating. Her flange has given up twice now, and you have to reach right around the back just to get a couple of fingers to it. Oh grow up Edited June 6, 2014 by Bigdar
Smaky 73 Report post Posted June 6, 2014 There is nothing wrong with a moist flange, when they gush tough then there is a 50% chance that it's bad.
Bigdar 62 Report post Posted June 6, 2014 One of the finest typos I think I've ever seen. No tough gushing at the moment
K9d 108 Report post Posted June 8, 2014 Decided to try and sort out the annoying rattle and check the fluids this morning, it took 3 litres of oil to get to the right level, think I've taken my eye of the ball a bit here.
