dizziebug 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2014 Hi All I've just registered on this forum to try and help my Uncle. I bought him & my Aunty a 147, 2l selespeed off a colleague as their replacement car as they desperately needed one. Unfortunately they started getting a problem, the car wouldn't select 4th gear. They ad it checked by a garage and codes P1747 & P1748 were thrown up, cleared but reoccured. A sort while later the car also stopped selecting reverse. Its been to their local Alfa specialist (KAP of Eastbourne), on the first visit they had it for 2 days and failed to get to it diagnosed. KAP have just had it back for a week to diagnose it again, and have removed the gearbox to do this ( ) and claim that there is water in the box and £3k needs to be spent on a new box. I'm not convinced and I think that they're possibly exploiting the fact that Uncle is not mechanically minded in the slightest.. As the car ia some way from me its making it difficult for me to get to look at it. Subsequently, from research, I've found a few things it could be but I wondered if any one could give me an incling of where to start please? Many thanks in advance
LJ_GQV 115 Report post Posted March 15, 2014 Hi dizziebug, welcome to AD I'm sure smaky will be able to point you in the right direction when he next logs on & hopefully its nowhere near as expensive as 3k to get the car back working again

Smaky 73 Report post Posted March 16, 2014 Hi, I'm affraid they have already taken the piss on this, it's nothing to do with the gearbox, there was no need to remove it, these 2 codes always come up when the clutch rod is out of adjustment and the system is struggling to engage gear, just like when you don't press the clutch pedal down far enough, all this would have required is a 5 minute session to recalibrate the clutch and run an end of line calibration on the system, if that failed then the only other problem that could cause it is a faulty EV2 Valve, which would cost about £100 to replace, I find £3K ludicrous and would insist that they gold plate every component they touch to justify that price. dizziebug 0 Report post Posted March 17, 2014 Thank you Smaky, I can't thank you enough! Perhaps you could send me your paypal address, if you've got one, and I could "buy you a drink".
Smaky 73 Report post Posted March 18, 2014 Thank you Smaky, I can't thank you enough! Perhaps you could send me your paypal address, if you've got one, and I could "buy you a drink". I could actually come down and sort the car out before they cause tremendous damage to gearbox and actuator.

Smaky 73 Report post Posted May 6, 2014 Thanks, funny how close they got to fixing it without realising, but it's just another example of a garage going in blind in the hope of a big payout
