milowokie 13 Report post Posted July 11, 2011 For the past eighteen months, my gearchange had got worse and worse. A hefty whack is required to move across the gate to 5th and 6th. I've got fucked off about it. That is all. Unless you can help.
jhc 28 Report post Posted July 11, 2011 Mine was all over the place too. Isnt it a common fault on alfas of a certain age? Something to do with the plastic ball joint cup? I think its an easy (if fiddly) fix.

Guest Report post Posted July 12, 2011 Hi milowokie, We had a similar experience with our 147, first off the gear lever was slacker than a lady-of-the-night's undergarments, then as it got worse trying to shift into any gear was like doing a three hour shift on the dumbells. We had the main dealer look at, the local garage, anyone who could hold a spanner at one point lol. Eventually took it to the nice chaps at Lyle's of Newcastle - turned out it was a quick fix, something to do with a part connecting the gear stick to the gearing mechanism (sorry if that's vague but I make websites for a living not fix cars ) Hope you get yours fixed soon... gear-changing can be dash good fun
Symon 1 Report post Posted July 12, 2011 The 156 V6 has a cable gear linkeage. Not sure if it can be adjusted, but lubing it up might help.
NineOneSix 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2011 Then he'd have probs with first to second and third to fourth too. Has it had a fluid change at all? Can sometimes mKe a gearbox feel new again.
Smaky 73 Report post Posted July 12, 2011 Check the ball end for elongation at the gearbox selector end, it's rare but happens and the rest of the gears would still feel fine.
milowokie 13 Report post Posted July 12, 2011 Smaky is that the real Smaky? Glad to have you aboard the board. I think it's at the gearstick end (ie underneath but above the exhaust). It goes into all gears OK, it just get hard to move the stick into the correct horizontal plane to push it to fifth or sixth, reverse with the collar up is no problem at all. Smaky 73 Report post Posted July 13, 2011 May well be the cup then, you'd need to drop the center tunnel to gain access to replace it.
