Anthony147 0 Report post Posted March 21, 2014 Guys, She's playing up and I have some initial thoughts and would be grateful for any input your experiences can offer. Car - 2003 2.0 Selespeed 80K, all belts, services and ancillaries up to date Background: Car is on a one year old clutch but has not had a calibration or rod length check since last then - this is first most in my thinking as root cause but happy to hear alternative theories based on experiences Symptoms: Occasional throbbing vibration when idling - increasing MCF warning when changing up past third - both when manually done and auto, these are coming and going as gears are changed up but not down Newest - Burning smell this morning (assumption clutch is now lunching itself?) All levels - Selespeed, Gearbox and power steering etc good and no loss noticed Thoughts: Ruled out - slave collapse as gearing still available Clutch rod - not correct or calibrating and as such causing clutch issue and has now moved to creating greater problems Clutch faulty / wearing out - although the fact it's one year old makes me feel this is unlikely, but a consequence of the clutch rod being out Possibly Gearbox gone - not really thinking this as she functions in all gears with or without MCF warning Actions: Get her on Alfa Diag and check clutch rod length Remove gearbox and check clutch condition - Can I do this with a scope? or will it have to be stripped down just to see? Replace gearbox, clutch as absolutely last resort - and anticipate cost at £500 / 650 which is not something I'm wanting to do on a whim. Help needed: Alfa diag on PC - Anyone local to Norbury South London who can do a diag in the next few days (I'll be seeking to do this regardless before anything else but don't have a PC (Mac User) to run it easily at hand) Any other items I should be checking before I start dismantling or calling in the cavalry? ideally seeking to limit cost exposure and the easiest elimination checks known would be of great benefit. Anthony147 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2014 What can I say - On this occasion Smaky was incorrect and it took him actually looking (Shock horror and he's somewhat slipping) to get the right diagnosis. Faulty coil pack and oil in plugs - all of 15 / 30 minutes work to rectify and being Smaky, noticed an issue with washer tubing so fixed at the same time, clutch rod adjustment as about year since fitting and a recalibration. Carlsberg don't make Alfa Mechanics but if they did - Smaky would be one. Come on, take it easy, even Chelsea got a lucky break this weekend. The coil pack was totally unexpected and proof that sometimes plugging in and ensuring the trail is hot is the best option, but as usual I had the spares to hand....and the coil pack wasn't replaced until after a test drive just to make sure it wasn't just wet plugs causing the issue.
