Firestorm 0 Report post Posted December 26, 2013 Hi all, I jus changed my selespeed pump n brake switch 2 days ago and all is fine. Then today while I was slowing down at traffic light the gear suddenly dropped to neutral n I couldn't engage any gear at all. and check gearbox message appeared. I tried to restart car n still same. Can't engage reverse or gear 1. Car was towed to workshop. Fault code is P2908 clutch sub-system n P0856 VDC Message from CAN. Tried to clear fault but after starting car, check gearbox msg is still there n still can't engage car. There was also no leak n selespeed pump seems to be working as I can hear the high pitch sound of the pump pressurizing. Anyone help pls..,, especially smacky Thank you very much! Smaky 73 Report post Posted December 27, 2013 (edited) How many Km has the car done? Have you checked the hydraulic fluid level? (the cap is on top of the pump section mounted on the gearbox of the 159) Edited December 27, 2013 by Smaky
Firestorm 0 Report post Posted December 27, 2013 The car is 6 yrs old. Done 76000km Selespeed accumulator was changed 3 mths ago The hyd fluid is gd. No leakage of any fluid
Smaky 73 Report post Posted December 27, 2013 The battery Voltage seems to be a bit low when the car is running, but the pressure is fine, I would have normally suspected a Pump or accumulator for those symptoms, but the first thing I would suggest in this case is check the battery terminals are tight and if they are then replace the battery, if thiss car is mainly used for city driving though then I think this could be the first warning that your clutch is wearing out. Is there a hint of a grinding noise from the clutch area?
Firestorm 0 Report post Posted December 27, 2013 (edited) Battery n accumulator was changed 3 mths ago. Pump 2 days ago. Clutch was changed 1.5 yrs n abt 17000 km ago. Is it true that if drive using sports mode the clutch will wear faster? I drove in sports mode for abt 8 mths and 8000km But I dun tink I heard any grinding noise from the clutch recently. yes, the car is used for city driving. if it is only the first warning of my clutch wearing out, why is it that the fault code cant be cleared and the check gearbox message is still there after clearing the faults. Thank you very much for the reply! Edited December 27, 2013 by Firestorm
Smaky 73 Report post Posted December 27, 2013 I doubt it' a orn clutch and driving in Sport mode is barely harder on the clutch than normal. The software you have is only for reading codes and parameters. For a better suite download www.multiecuscan.net and buy a license for that, then you can run a calibration which will reset the learned parameters within the seles ECU and should then allow you to clear the previos codes. We didn't get the 159 Selespeed in this market so I haven't actually worked on one, but I know how they are meant to work so don't dispair. So in the mean time, disconnect and reconnect every plug you can find on the selespeed loom... Then the next logical thing which would prevent the gears from engaging would be the clutch speed sensor (55185789), though if that fails it would nornally still be attempting to change gear but just be a bit slippy as it released. Firestorm 0 Report post Posted December 30, 2013 (edited) hi smacky, the workshop told me that the fault code 2908 is power chain control module PCM. there is also another fault code that points to no signal to gearbox. so they determine that the ECU is faulty and need to change. This is goin to be a big ticket problem.. Edited December 30, 2013 by Firestorm
Smaky 73 Report post Posted December 30, 2013 Are the latest codes, P2908 and P2905?
Smaky 73 Report post Posted December 30, 2013 If they go down the route of replacing the Sele ECU then it will cost almost £1000, I can't see that being the fault as every one I've read about with those codes has been resolved with a clutch change, as that is fairly new on yours I would suggest that either a plug is not seated correctly or the system i not calibrated properly in some way. Firestorm 0 Report post Posted December 31, 2013 (edited) the codes are P2908, not sure abt the other one. btw, the gears are able to engage when the engine is not started. i hav towed the car to another workshop that specialises in Alfa for 2nd opinion... thnx once again! happy new year! Smaky 73 Report post Posted December 31, 2013 It's not the ECU then. Need to really check the clutch speed sensor.

Smaky 73 Report post Posted January 3, 2014 Post #5 nailed it. Just knew it wouldn't be an ECU. Good luck with the repairs.

Saabzero 0 Report post Posted October 1, 2014 Hi All, I just had my selespeed actuator replaced cos the housing broke. After replacing a recon actuator, the car is able to engage into 1st gear and reverse gear only. Cannot engage 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. But without engine being started, it shows can engage all gears. What could be the likely reason. Any help appreciated. Thanks. By the way, car is still in the workshop trying to resolve the problem
