paulfern 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2012 Hi, im currently having trouble with my Alfa Romeo 156 2ltr selespeed. It keeps putting itself into neutral and stalling whilst slowing down.Also have an engine light on that relates to the selespeed along with beeping every 90 seconds. Just had a diagnostics test and error code P1653 displayed. Cant find any traces of this code in my alfa manual. Any feedback would be appreciated. Smaky 73 Report post Posted September 24, 2012 (edited) First off I hink the car has lied to you on the code front, you simplly cannot get that failure as the car does not have that system (Electric power steering). BUT (read on) .... The symptoms you are describing are those of a faulty selespeed pump of dead accumulator, the latter being the most likely. Nothing to worry about, £150 maximum to repair.
