Alfa GT Engine light on sluggish on low revs

My 1.9 JTDM has Motor total failure message and engine light on. In responsive in low rev range. Removed EGR valve and was clean & valve springs open freely. Sometimes light goes out & all ok for a journey. Then next time car used, same again. Any ideas??
