CF1 oil vapour valve

I've just been having a look at my oil breather valve on my CF1. This is the one where a metal valve is screwed into the throttle body.

 

The valve seems to operate but I'm wondering if all is well.

 

With the plunger fully at the cam cover end of the valve it looks like this.

 

But it isn't being held there by a spring. Moving the plunger towards the throttle body, it encounters the spring about 6mm back. Like this

 

It can then be moved against the spring about a similar distance until the valve closes and it looks like this from the throttle side

 

Blowing through it from the throttle side, the plunger freely moves to the cam cover end and seals. Blowing from the cam cover end moves the plunger against the spring and allows air to flow through to the throttle. If the spring is fully compressed, no air will flow to the throttle.

 

I suspect it is working correctly, but can someone confirm that the first part of the travel isn't resisted by a spring.
