  • What car do you drive?
    Alfa 156 sportwagon selespeed
  • Location
    London
  1. I'm in woolwich but also quite often in old street if that helps. It would be great to get a solid opinion!
  2. You are the expert! This car is a bottomless pit! Any recommendations? How long driving as it is would it be before the box goes? It's had a lot of work done but even a 156 nut like me has limits!
  3. So it looks like to get it to 28mm I'll need a new clutch. Damn this car costs! What is it doing to the gear box on an incorrect setting?
  4. Hello all. When changing down in to 2nd or 1st there is a clack sound like a metal spoon hitting solid metal. It's always done this and gets louder after 1/2 hour of heavy London traffic. The car is a 2001 sport wagon with 47k on the clock. I've just had a service, gearbox & sele oil change & the system calibrated. The mechanic said he couldnt get to the reading of 28 so it's set a 22. He said the clutch might be worn. Gear changes are very fast and smooth but the above issue is still there. The car has had little use over the years and bit by bit I've been bringing it up to standard. Is this issue something I can live with for a bit or is doom imminent? Pressure is good & nothing is leaking. Thanks!
  5. I've just bought a 2001 156 sportwagon 2.0. It's done 46,000miles. The last owner has had it since 2003, the book is all stamped and I have some bills including cambelt. The test drive was fine but today after driving around for 5 hours repeatedly stopping to do errands etc the bulb failure light came on followed by every single warning light and the selespeed light. The car then went into limp mode. I had anticipated something like this may happen as the car hasn't been driven much at all for a year, throughout it's life there have been some years where it has done no miles! I've previously bought a lower miler like this which also had teething probs after that it was the best car ever. The car now seems to be stuck in limp mode, the car is immaculate but the engine bay is a bit grubby and the battery cover is missing exposing the connectors. Around the selespeed oil cap is loads of dirt and sludge.Today was also permanently torrential rain. Before limp mode the gears were smooth & there was no hint of any problems. In limp mode there's a slight clunk down changing into 1st. The car overall feels tight and the suspension is silent! The sele oil looks low but I'm not really sure what it's supposed be at. I was going to give the car a full service but now this is top priority, any suggestions would be much appreciated! I would like to keep this car long term.
