Squeak/chirp From Front Nearside Area

Recommended Posts

I've been getting a noise from the front left wheel area of my GT for the last few days when I'm going over uneven roads and small bumps and it's driving me mental. Car steers fine brakes fine etc the noise doesn't go when I brake audit can be replicated by pushing down on the wing. It seems to be coming from behind the centre of the wheel.

I had the upper wishbones changed 3 months ago for TRWs and the noise when they were shot was different and only happened over bigger bumps/speedhumps, so assuming they're ok what else could be the culprit?

Upper wishbone bushes are the favourite, if the arms have been replaced with cheap ones in the past then the bushes will not be greased.

They were done by the place in dunstable you're so fond of Alex. I assume they did them properly... They do enough of em.

OK, there's the problem, they use the cheap shitty ones and pass them off as the expensive ones and they don't grease them. Take it back and complain, I bet if you phone they'll say give it a few weeks and it'll go away. IT WONT, if it squeaks, it is wearing itself away and will only get worse until it starts to knock again. The next time you phone, they'll check their complaints numbers list and just wont answer your call.

I'm not convinced it is the uppers mate like I said the sound seems to be coming from around/behind the centre of the wheel and it's a different sound completely to when the wishbones were on the way out and happens over smaller bumps and ripples in the road, or even if I wiggle around in the seat while the car is stationary.

If it turns out it is them I will of course get on their case.

Anyways the noise has vanished with the wet weather so it's pointless me having a look for the time being but you mentioned drop links in my double post. Can they emit a squeak when wearing out and would the noise come from behind the wheel nut area?

Smaky I know you're the expert and I respect your opinion but surely if the squeak was coming from BEHIND the centre of the wheel and not above it that would suggest it was something other than upper arm bushes?

But as they are the only thing in that area that squeaks and every time we've had this question asked on every forum it has always been these bushes and knowing the scams and the workmanship that the company who fitted them for you have, then I am pretty confident they are the cause. The only other option is the lower arms but normally when they fail the steering center moves and thyres scrub away faster than usual.

OK Alex I'll get it checked out by someone independent and I'll post back here with findings.

Thanks for your time and I do appreciate your help and expertise. Just wish I was closer to your neck of the woods mate.

All they have to do is split the upper ball joint then push the arm up and down and you'll probably get the squeak.

OK so bit of an update..been mad busy with work so not had much time for anything let alone getting the car booked in but I did get a mechanic from an alfa specialist to have a quick look and a drive and he seems to think the noise is caused by a dry joint somewhere. Obviously he can't narrow it down without getting underneath it but he seems sure it's not the upper wishbone bush as the noise is too high pitched and sounds more like a metal to metal squeak.

He assured me it wasn't dangerous and to bring it in when I have more time.

I have noticed it gets worse when turning right lately and it's definitely getting louder so I'm gonna book a day off work so I cam get it seen to asap

Thanks again for your help and input peeps!

:)

Had a look at the strut mount area today and the threaded bolt is quite a bit off centre leaning in towards the engine. Car still drives well and steering is straight. Could that point to anything specific? Can't get a day off til at least middle ofnext week and I don't wanna be driving it if it's unsafe..

Do you mean the 4 studs which come up into the engine bay or the long bolt which holds the arm to the mount? An easyt way to check if the mount is in the correct position is to see if the structure around unused hole is buckled, if it is then whoever changed the arms didn't bother to do it right and never bothered to sit the arm support in place before tightening the nuts.

The long single bolt surrounded by rubber which is hidden beneath the plastic cap. No buckling anywhere just the bolt is a good 5-6 mm off centre towards the engine. Top mount gone?

Yep, mount has failed, extremely rare to see that on these cars as the mount is a solid bush, the spring will need compressing to replace that at which time you may find the shocks are knackered too. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ALFA-ROMEO-156-147-GT-ALL-MODELS-New-Front-Shock-Absorber-Top-Mount-60625002-/181420210431?fits=Car+Make%3AAlfa+Romeo%7CModel%3A156&hash=item2a3d7cb8ff
