Morgan's Got A New Toy

Recommended Posts

Sorry folks, it's not an Alfa, but as car enthusiasts, I'm sure you'll approve.

After the Golf started ingesting oil into the coolant (uh oh), I decided it was time to get rid. Not having much in the way of budget for a replacement, I decided to drop £950 on this beauty. ;)

She's a 1999 E39 BMW 528i SE Touring, with full leathers, factory-fit upgraded alloys, 5-speed slushbox, M-sport steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, climate control, parking sensors, self-levelling suspension, 6-CD autochanger... And of course that lusty 2.8 24v straight six, developing the thick end of 200bhp.

Why a Touring? UK family holidays for the four of us were always a tight squeeze in the Golf, so an estate car fits the bill. Plus it'll swallow my mountain bike, no worries. But if the wife asks, the extra room in the back is for when we go on holiday.

I like you price point as well, your almost reaching my maximum budget for a car but managed to stay just within.

Saying that I did see a 156 GTA SW on ebay for £4k that had me very tempted. :)

I paid a lot more for the Golf, and look where that got me (though it's doing rather well on eBay, at the time of writing :Smug: ).

I'm at my most comfortable when I'm paying less than a bag of sand for a motor. Anything more than that makes me a little twitchy. :o

I might have a roof rack that'll fit that if you're interested

Edit..

Scrub that, yours has got rails.

Guest Tony156

I think I could be tempted to exchange my 156sw for that.

Nice looking motor!

I'd go for Poland after Austria, but they're all over here. :P

I'll save some cash and invade Heathrow instead. LOADS of Poles in that neck of the woods.

Cheers Smiffster.

You know what it's like when you look at a second-hand car. You go around it, looking for problems. Then, you get inside, and test all the toys.

Well, I couldn't find anything on this car that didn't work. All the electrics are spot on, no warning lights, no slow windows, no sticky door locks, the engine idles rock steady, temp gauge gets to top dead centre and stays there. Drives straight, stops straight, steers properly, rides properly, handles properly, etc.

To say I was well happy, after schlepping across London on public transport to look at it, would be an understatement.

Nice colour. Get rid of the ginger lenses.

Nothing compared to the red M5 i was tempted by though

You can't see it in these pictures, but the lenses do mist up a bit (they all do that, sir), so I'm going to replace the units... Which will have clear indicator lenses. ;)

Here's our panzer, complete with the biggest roof box on the market ( that might not be the case now though ).

We paid £1250 for it over two years ago ( I think ), it came through as a part ex at a mates garage. ;)

Full leather, parking sensors etc. no satnav though.
