What car did you learn to drive in?

Recommended Posts

I'll start .....

My Dad had a Maxi 1750 so I started driving in that. He always maintained that if you could drive that you could drive anything ... which is true, cos it was shit, really.

He also had a Transit minibus which I drove occasionally as a learner, and also when we went on holiday with our caravan, I used to drive the Maxi towing the caravan on my L plates ....

At some point during my learning process we acquired a Morris Minor 1000 saloon for my mum, I helped my dad bring it back to life (it had been in a old lady's garage for years after her husband died and she didn't drive), and finally passed my test in it. :D

of course times have changed and you have to take a separate towing test now ... luckily being ancient, I don't need to, which is handy when I need to tow the horse trailer ... ;)

Your turn ....

I started in Hubby's 1974 Triumph Toledo 1300 (well, a 1300 block with a 1500 head)

Then My actual real lessons were in a peugeot 206, which I blew up :D

During this time I started driving an Audi 80 sport on private land

Then My driving instructor got a Seat Leon  Fab little car that :D

And Hubby insured me on his 1.2 (ahem 1.3 engine  ) Nova Swing... :D

A Honda Jazz.

The instructer made me promise I wouldn't buy one as he said it simply wouldn't suit me!

Hubby bought a 156 intended for me before I'd even passed my test but bought a new clio Dynamique also.

I learned to drive in a 1971 Mini Clubman, that my Dad and I replaced the gearbox on (it was an auto, so we fitted it with a manual 'box).

My Dad wanted me to learn how to handle a more powerful car, so we also went out in his Sierra 2.0i DOHC every now and again. Rear wheel drive, no traction control, 110bhp per tonne. Those were FUN driving lessons.

A Series 1 Land Rover, driving round the paddocks picking up the firewood... I was about 12, and needed both feet to push the clutch in... :$

I am old and I learned to drive (after a Lambretta LD125 and a couple of motorbikes) on a 1953 Morris Oxford MO side-valve which I bought for £30. The MO looks like a large Morris Minor but much nicer! My Dad did all the teaching and he used to make me drive on any longer journeys we took and made me go quickly enough not to hold up the traffic, so I learned early the art of overtaking sans power. It needs planning! I passed my test first time but not before I had an argument with the Examiner over the safety of the three-point-turn he asked me to do.

A good mate of mine failed his first test but was consoled by the Examiner telling him he had completed the course in record time!

I learnt to drive in a lot of cars.

Mainly e30 325s, xr3is, mk1 golf gtis etc.

I learnt to pass my test in a mk3 fiesta and a mk3 escort.

2 weeks after I passed my test I drove into a wall at 60mph in the same (but this time, stolen) mk3 escort... the wall just happened to be my driving instructors garden wall.

After that there were a few years of e30 325 sports, e28 528s, sierras, mk1 mondeos and others....

then quite a few years later, I had a mazda xedos...

It put me off too, cant remember the type of engine in a '90 Fiesta, I think it was a CVH but it sounded absolutely terrible and lasted about as long as a paper hat in a monsoon

Just shows how old he was when he took his test! Couldn't get the insurance on that now!
