My recommendation would be a Peugeot 306 HDi (facelift model, GTi-6 alloys, tasteful shade of metallic paint). A decent steer, and still nice-looking, even today. Job's a good'un. I've driven an A4 S-Line Diesel and it was bloody awful, uncomfortable, uninvolved and common as muck, but then I find all the VAG cars I've driven to be like that.
