Renault megane starting problems

Recommended Posts

The starter motor is almost working, it clicks and turns the engine a tiny weeny bit, you can see the pulleys move... but its not turning it over.

I've tried jump starting it, swapping the battery etc but it still does the same.

Its almost like the engine is seized or something, but its not cos I can turn it on the crank.

The alternator belt has just been replaced, but I cant see how thats the problem. It must have something to do with it though cos it worked fine before it went.

Help?!

its quite easy to turn by hand tbh, I was doing it with a short ratchet to get the belt on.

Yes, the alternator belt. Its impossible to stretch it on and I couldnt be arsed to remove anything, so I got it on all the pulleys/tensioner except the crank pulley, stretched it halfway round then turned the crank by hand to pull the belt onto it.

The starter should be ok, it worked fine before the belt went and the first couple of times I tried to start it it did spin the engine, but it span very freely and showed absolutely no sign of firing. After that it started clicking.

I've had jump leads on it and swapped the battery for a known good one but it did the same so its not a battery issue., though it is behaving as if it had no charge.

15mm spanner...

Lazy arse

You really are a munky.

Check the earth. Jump leads, positive on battery, negative on the engine.

Then try a starter motor

meh, I've put hundreds of belts on that way, its common practice.

It does have a bit of a pikey fix on the wire to the starter motor. SOmeone has used 8awg stereo wire and a couple of chocolate blocks to make it reach. But all the connections are good and it worked fine like that before.

Check battery terminals are tight,

Jump lead from engine to battery -ve (bad engine earth cable),

Scrap it, it's french and doesn't matter.

its not the wiring, or the timing belt. The dodgy wiring is coming off the alternator not to the starter and I tried earthing the block.

Now the alarm keeps going off.
