  • What car do you drive?
    Alfa Romeo 156 2,0 Selespeed
  • Location
    Denmark, Thisted
  1. Hi again guys Sorry for not updating in a while. Thanks for your replies! Smaky, when I removed the gearbox it looked fine. The clutch wasn't soaked in oil. When fitting the new release bearing I also replaced the little tube/axle it slides on, including the small sealing behind it. In the meantime I have replaced the actuator group, with a used one bought from the nearest Alfa enthusiastic 2nd hand dealer (150 miles away), and made sure to tighten the pinch-bolt properly Bazz. I was unable to find any Tutela CS Speed to fill the system with, UK sellers couldn't ship oil to Denmark, but I found something called ELF Speedmatic made specifically to Selespeed systems. I was able to adjust the clutch rod to 28,5mm, bleed the system and complete an eol calibration. Took it for a drive and it worked super. Though I noticed a bit of jiggling just as it released the clutch when engaging a gear, it felt like it engaged the throttle a 10th of a second to early - but it was really not anything special. I have driven it a lot, mostly short trips to work and around town. Just as I thought my 156 finally was doing ok, I made a longer trip 80 miles out in the morning - no problems. Then when going back in the afternoon, the car was VERY jumpy when engaging 1st and 2nd gear. The car now does this everytime the engine/gearbox gets up to normal working temperature after 30-45 minutes. It feels like its messing around the the clutch and the throttle, unable to find the actual 'clutch-point' where its supposed to activte the throttle, and the result is either a lot of jumping or even some rubberburning. Very embarrassing. When mounting the used actuator group I decided not the replace the accumulator on in with the new accumulator I had on my 'old' actuator - thinking that the one on the 'new' used actuator most likely worked after being checked by my parts pusher. My only plan right now is to buy some original oil from the local Fiat dealer at 50£ a liter (!!!!), and replace the accumulator with the new one. I kind of hope that the ELF oil somehow is too thin when warm, and combined with a maybe little too worn accumulator, it gives me my problem. What do you guys think? Any input is greatly appereciated
  2. Hi guys! Thank You for letting me join! I'm sorry to bring up yet another thread about Selespeed. I have read loads of other threads trying to find an answer to my problem, but without any luck. I'm a mechanic myself, but have NO experience with Selespeed (until recently after reading all those forum posts, and trying to fix my problem.) Smaky seems to be man everyone recommends, so Smaky - I hope you see this! My problem has started out small, but of course it has escalated. I'm VERY close to just scrapping my, until recently, beloved Alfa. I will try to be as specific as I can - so there is a lot of text. So grab yourself a cup of coffee, here comes my story.; I've had my 156 2,0 selespeed for about a year. Every now and then it has jumped into neutral (like once every 2-4 weeks) and I've just had to push the lever forwards and it has engaged gear again, and its been working perfectly again for those 2-4 weeks. This could happen in any gear, but mostly when cruising at 80km/t in fifth gear. No big problem. Oh, and when accelerating very hard the gear indicator has been flashing. Only in 2nd and 3rd above like 4-5000 rpm on the engine, until gearing up. Recently, it has jumped to neutral a few times when changing around 2/3 gear in city trafic (both in city mode and manual). Then I would have to come to a full stop, turn of the engine and start again. Then it engaged gears again, and worked perfectly fine. Its been doing that maybe 1 or 2 times over a 14 day period. Very annoying. Then one day as I got home from work, I would brake to a complete stop, as I usually do when parking my car - But the clutch isn't being pressed/released so the engine 'dies' because its engaged in first gear. Now the car wont start because it has to be in neutral to start. But it will not go into neutral. I get my diagnostic tools from the workshop on the car and things look ok. But the clutch rod adjustment can not be completed, my tester says. (It's an italian diagnostic tool called Texa. We use this for most cars in our daily work.) So I suspect the clutch or clutch bearing has gone. I get the car to the garage and when I get the gearbox off, I see the clutch bearing lying in several pieces. I mount a new clutch, new bearing, replace all seals etc., refit everything, adjust the clutch rod to 28.5mm, recalibrate the actuators. And everything works, so of course I'm super happy! I go for a test drive, at this time 3 weeks have passed since the car 'broke down' (fixed a lot of other thing too - nothing regarding any electrical systems or the gearbox/selespeed), and I notice the gear indicator i flashing frequently. Mostly in 5th gear, but also 3rd and 4th. I keep going, because it seems to work perfectly. I try to make the system mess up by doing weird changes, but it just works. Until I return to the garage after driving 30-50 km. Just 500 meters from the garage it jumps to neutral, unable to go into gear again. I try shutting of and starting the engine again - no luck. But it can engage reverse. So I slowly reverse the car to the garage. I notice the clutch rod is no longer at 28.5mm, but something like 29mm - not far from 28.5 anyway. I adjust it again to 28.5mm, thinking that maybe its just the very sensitive system doing its thing. Take the car for a spin, seems to work perfectly. But again suddently it jumps to neutral. Cannot engage any gear. Recalibrate using my computer, then I can engage 1st but trying to go to 2nd will make it jump to neutral again. So i creep in 1st to the garage. I read something similar to my problem regarding the accumulator on one of the many forums. I change the accumulator, the relay for the pump and clean every ground and electrical connector on the gearbox and actuator. I also change the cars battery as it only has half the power its supposed to. Bleed the actuator/accumulator, readjust and recalibrate. I go for a test drive with my diagnostic tool in the car to watch hydraulic pressure, electrical current etc. Everything looks super. Operating around 45-55 bars of pressure, 14volts of current etc etc. Eventually after 30km. the car jumps to neutral. Nothing wrong with pressure or anything. No fault codes. I'm broken. Crying like a five year old girl. I do a recalibration with the computer to make it work (at least for a short time to get it back to the garage), but this time it cant complete the calibration. It says there was a fault switching between 3rd and 4th. I wait for 20 minutes, try again, and it works. I drive back to the garage and walks home. I decide to let the local experts look at it. A Fiat workshop, that used to be Alfa too but somehow nomore. They have the right tools and knowledge. The mechanic was a friend of mine a few years back. He has the car all next day, does a lot of diagnostics and calibrations. He gets no fault codes, and everything looks fine. He also took it for a test drive and ended up stuck in neutral in a small village 10 km. away for an hour before he could return to their workshop. He calls me and says that he is sure its the actuator unit that is dead, worn or its rods are rusted inside. When he tried a calibration, the computer said there was a fault switching between 1st and 2nd. He asked me about the oil I had used for the actuator, it looked a little thin he said. Could all this be because of the wrong fluid being used, or do I really need to get me a new actuator unit? I know now that the correct oil is the Tutela stuff, I used Pentosin 11S - which my oil provider told me would be correct. I really hope to get some response on this one. The car is really driving me mad. Cheers Daniel :Big Grin:
