alfizta 6 Report post Posted August 1, 2014 the other day, when starting the engine, a severe tapping (metal hitting metal) noise, never heard before, coming from the top of the engine and more audible near the exhaust manifold. 2nd start, the same noise. I quitted and grabbed my 146 for the task. when returned home, started the engine again and noticed that the noise was going away as the engine was warming up. the day before had a ride with no issues at all. next day to the "tap" day, started the and run the engine all day with no strange noises... relief!... what should I be fearing? smiffy 99 Report post Posted August 1, 2014 Could be the variator
alfizta 6 Report post Posted August 1, 2014 thanks for the reply smiffy. she has been serviced all arround (belts, variator, spark plugs...) only 20 000 km ago. also been told could be a dropped valve, bad cams, or just an hydraulic lifter bad on oil for a moment... rob3rto 7 Report post Posted August 2, 2014 Could be a crack in the manifold. As it heats up it closes up an the noise lessens. Do a tissue paper test. If cracked, you could get it welded by a cast iron welder specialist or you could wire brush it and use thermosteel putty. Good for 2000°f.

alfizta 6 Report post Posted August 11, 2014 have made some research and if the spark plugs are sothy (greasy black) that may indicate a bad lifter or droping valve...
