Sele jerking badly when take-off

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

My sele has been developing bad jerking during take-off and reverse lately. Sometimes the engine will cut-off and selespeed system failure/engine oil pressure low will show.

It's like when you drive manual and you don't press/lift clutch pedal properly.

Once you manage to take off, everything will be fine, gearchange 2-3-4-5 and downshifts are ok.

clutch plate travel is 28.3.

Pressure is within 45-55, pump is new.

FES is showing error in clutch sensor and engine speed.

However clutch and selection sensor already replaced before this around 2 months ago and it was fine until now.

EOL failed with message "clutch valve error" or "clutch closed".

Also it has new clutch kit 6 months ago, so I am not sure if clutch/release bearing is failing so soon. plus, the gearchange is normal, I can get all the gears.

I suspect it's the EV0 which is causing problem, not regulating the oil pressure to clutch properly, since symptoms will come after increase in temp to 70, and it's summer here started 1 month ago with temperature around 30-40C. Also, when I lift the bonnet during idle (engine on), I can see the clutch rod is shaking a bit.

is it really EV0 or other problem?

thanks :Smug:

This sounds like a major problem. The 2 codes you have I think are red herrings left when the engine stalled, what I would start with (though the pressures and rod length appear correct) is to check under the gearbox for a clearish fluid dripping from the bell housing, then poke your finger in the inspection hole under the thermostat to feel if it's oily, along with that, pull the clutch speed sensor out and check the end of it is flat, any scoring and it'll be a clutch+/gearbox change.

That's the worst case, there is 2 more options that spring to mind and are simple to do (relatively), first is that the crank sensor is on the way out, but if the car starts immediatly then I'd ignore that (for now), so secondly swap the clutch poition (the forward black one on the actuator)and gear range sensor (on the back of the actuator) around, calibrate the system, check the rod length again, if it's out of limits (28 - 28.5mm) then adjust it back in.

If those fail then get back asap and I'll give you some more checks to do.

Come back in a few days and let us know if this has stopped all the problems.

Hi All.

My first post!! unfortunately another negative Selespeed post :Cry: I am a bit of an Alfa man, as I work for a company that specialise in Classic Alfa Romeos from the 50's to 70's and I also own a 72 GTV. I really don't have a clue about Selespeed, but I did know they are not popular in the trade :He He: I decided hack this thread as I am experiencing a similar problem with my car.

I am the proud owner of a 156 SW Sele. I have owned the car since March 2014 and only covered 42k miles from new.

As you can tell from the above miles, it was not used much. In 2008 at around 28k miles, it had a complete new clutch kit and gearbox seal, total cost of nearly £800, work was carried out by a reputable Alfa Romeo specialist in London.

Anyway, like the GZPERMADI my car has developed a jerk action. It's actually quite bad when the car is warmed up, at the same time with the jerk, as it's about to pull off ( 1st gear ) it makes a metallic crunching noise, a bit like the diff is about to fall out. I guess this might be the release bearing.

Before the above started, from cold the first two gear changes were always just like an old granny changing gears ( slipping ). I do also have an oil leak coming from the bell housing  and the oil smells exactly like gearbox oil.

I don't have Alfadiag etc, I do own a Sykes Pickavant acr4, which I purchased for another car that I own. Can this be used on this vehicle to do some test with the correct cartridge? or is it too old fashioned?

Reading the above post by Smaky, seem to lead to a major mechanical problem......Is this the end of my Sele at only 42k miles?:Cry:

The noise as you pull off is the clue here, I'd suspect that the front bearing has collapsed in the gearbox, remove the brass colored speed sensor in the front of the gearbox and check the end of it for physical damage, if there is then you have the answer... box rebuild and new clutch.

So the front bearing collapsing is common?

You will obviously hear a bad noise while driving.

Will gear changes be noisy?

It's more common on seles as the system puts more stress on the gearbox than a normal manual, they normally can just be replaced without too much other damage to the box, but it still requires a complete rebuild to clean and inspect, it will though now be using the clutch plate as the bearing which is what the noises are you can hear, the clutch will also be covered in gearbox oil which is why it MUST be replaced.
